Murray hopes to thrive under pressure again

Murray hopes to thrive under pressure again

Andy Murray hopes his ability to produce his best tennis on the big stage will continue as he looks to make history against Novak Djokovic in the Australian Open final.
No man in the Open era has ever won their second grand slam title immediately after claiming their first and Murray will look to back-up his US Open success in September by also taking the trophy in Melbourne to complete a remarkable few months.
Defeat to Roger Federer in the 2012 Wimbledon final gave weight to the theory the 25-year-old would always be the bridesmaid but he has answered his critics in spectacular fashion.
He gained revenge on Federer in the Olympic final in August and then, a few weeks later, edged out Djokovic in five gripping sets to win in New York.
"I think I started to play better tennis and played at my optimum level more in the big matches over the last year or so which hasn't always been the case," said the Scot.
"That's what changed for me."
Murray accepts he will have to produce his best once again if he is to see off defending champion Djokovic, who was ruthless in his semi-final demolition of fourth seed David Ferrer.
"He's number one in the world, he was in the US Open final, French Open final, Wimbledon semis and he's in the final here. And he's playing extremely well," he said.
Djokovic also has the added advantage of an extra 24 hours' rest.
He played his semi, all 89 minutes of it, against Ferrer on Thursday night, a day before Murray battled to a five-set, four-hour win over Federer.
"You just try your best to be in the best possible condition for Sunday," said Murray.
"But realistically you're probably not going to feel perfect because of how the match went (against Federer), but it's not to say you can't recover well enough to play your best tennis."
Djokovic does not feel advantaged by the scheduling and was quick to point out his opponent's remarkably straightforward passage to the last four.
The Serbian said: "Yes, Andy played a five-set match against Roger but apart from that he hasn't really been tested the whole tournament.
"Also, he's considered as one of the physically strongest and fittest guys around.
"So I am sure he is going to be fit for the final."
Murray said he hoped the match was "physical" and Djokovic is expecting a long, gruelling encounter.
"Considering the fact every time we played in the last six, seven meetings, it was always a long match, going three sets or five at the slams," he said.
"So I guess we have to expect something similar to happen and I'm ready for that."
The pair have known each other since childhood and were born just a week apart.
And Djokovic admits it is nice that their friendship has developed into a healthy rivalry.
"I don't know that when we were 11 we knew what a rivalry was at the time," he said.
"We were just trying to play tennis and enjoy the game.
"As we developed, we improved our games, we improved as athletes, as people, and it's nice to see somebody that you grew up with doing so well."
Djokovic joked Murray had changed over the past 14 years.
Asked what an 11-year-old Murray was like, he said: "He had quite a lot of hair, a lot of curly hair. He was also quite pale.
"He got more sun over the years training in Barcelona. He has more of a tan now than when he was a junior."

Djokovic set for Australia three-peat , Federer feels very young.

Djokovic set for Australia three-peat

Novak Djokovic will begin his Australian Open campaign as the overwhelming favourite to complete a hat-trick of titles in Melbourne.
The world number one has won three of his five Grand Slam titles at Melbourne Park where the bounce and pace of the Plexicushion surface is perfectly suited to his game.
This time the draw has been kind to him as well. His two biggest rivals - Roger Federer and Andy Murray are in the same half - while the third, Rafael Nadal continues to be out of commission.
If the results follow the seedings, and they have largely done so in recent Grand Slams, Djokovic will meet David Ferrer in the semi-final while one of Federer or Murray will eliminate the other.
More than Ferrer though, it is the presence of Tomas Berdych on his side of the draw that might furrow Djokovic's brow a bit.
The Czech, who upset Federer in the quarter-finals of the US Open last year, is scheduled to meet Djokovic at the same stage in Melbourne. Part of the block of players that have been hovering on the fringes of Grand Slam glory just behind the top four for quite a while now, Berdych will again be a dangerous foe in Melbourne where he gave Nadal a big fright last year.

Federer: I still feel like I'm very young

Federer: I still feel like I'm very young

World number two Roger Federer says he still has the desire to compete at the very top and continue vying for trophies.
Abhishek Mehrotra
Despite having been written off numerous times in recent years Federer, who will turn 32 in August, has continued to defy expectations by repeatedly challenging for some of tennis' biggest trophies.
And he has every intention of doing so in the foreseeable future.
"It really is great how happy I've been playing for so long," he said at a special media session organised by Credit Suisse in Singapore when asked what keeps him going after having achieved almost everything the game has to offer.  Read Full Art Here http://www.espnstar.com/tennis/australian-open/news/detail/item916650/Federer:-I-still-feel-like-I'm-very-young/

Man Utd vs Liverpool - 13.01.2013 Preview

Man Utd

Liverpool

Sunday 13th January 2013
Venue: Old Trafford
Kick-off: 13:30

Sturridge signing "a gamble" - Ferguson Sir Alex Ferguson believes Liverpool boss Brendan Rodgers has taken a punt on signing Daniel Sturridge. Having been left with only Luis Suarez as a regular striker when the last transfer window closed, Rodgers moved quickly in this one to supplement his forward options. Sturridge is an England international. But his four caps equal the number of clubs he has played for, with a period on loan at Bolton in addition to spells with Manchester City and Chelsea prior to his big #12million Anfield move. He could start alongside Suarez in Sunday's eagerly-anticipated Old Trafford showdown, but Ferguson feels his ability cannot be taken for granted. "The big issue for Liverpool is whether they include new signing Daniel Sturridge," Ferguson told United Review. "Certainly the arrival of Sturridge gives Brendan Rodgers more strength and options up front. "Sturridge has had a few clubs but I don't blame him for jumping at the chance of joining Liverpool because he just wasn't playing regularly with Chelsea and I always rate a player whose priority is wanting to play. "Even so, his track record moving between a number of clubs suggests Brendan Rodgers is taking a bit of a gamble, but he clearly knows what he is doing." Ferguson has selection issues of his own to deal with, not least whether to draft Nani and Anderson straight back into his starting line-up after recovering from their respective hamstring strains. The likelihood is that both men will be on the bench at best, although Rio Ferdinand is glad to have them back. "They are both naturally talented footballers," said Ferdinand. "You don't really get players who can beat opponents in the middle of the park these days. "That is a good asset to have and is something Anderson has above anyone else. He can go past players and commit people. "Nani is the same. He is one of the most talented players I have played with. "He is always a threat. He is quick, sharp and shoots off both feet. "He can cross the ball too so overall, he has everything." Rodgers admits his side are still some way off matching United's consistent dominance, but he remains confident it can be achieved. It is almost 23 years since the Reds won their last league title and in the intervening period they have had to watch their arch-rivals accumulate championships with alarming regularity. Two seasons ago United moved themselves clear of Liverpool's tally with a record 19th title, and it may be a while before the Merseysiders are in a position to genuinely think they can begin levelling things up again. "Of course Manchester United have been very dominant over a number of years but this is a football club that also had dominance for many years," said the Liverpool manager. "What you are always fighting for, every day, is to get back to that level. "It's a long, hard journey but it has to start somewhere, and what I've seen in this first period that I've been here is that going forward, we can achieve great things. "The root of it is having a competitive squad and that is what we are trying to build, create consistency and an environment which allows you to learn and develop. "There is no doubt on the day, as we have shown this season, we will be a match for anyone but we are now starting to see that consistency and that is important if you are going to succeed. "That will be the benchmark for us going forward and hopefully we can keep progressing up the table." Liverpool head to Old Trafford 21 points behind leaders United. Only once since Sir Alex Ferguson joined United in 1987 have Liverpool been so far behind them at this stage - in 1994 under Graeme Souness. This week Sturridge insisted there was no club in England bigger than Liverpool. It was a statement viewed with scorn and disdain but Rodgers was mindful to agree. "It's two of the biggest clubs in the world, not just in Britain. Two clubs who are renowned worldwide," he said. "It's history that makes a club. Of course we are fighting in the present moment to be better and to improve but the history of this club is incredible. "People will knock it at the moment because of the standards that were achieved here in the 1970s and 1980s, but that doesn't stop it being one of the biggest clubs in the world, and a club many players want to play for. "Both clubs are institutions in their own right."

Fergie was unaware of Liverpool position

Manchester United boss Sir Alex Ferguson admits he had no clue old rivals Liverpool were a massive 21 points behind the current Barclays Premier League leaders.
