Ever since Kobe Bryant's guarantee that the Lakers will make the playoffs, the Lakers have reeled off three straight wins. Could the Mamba guarantee be working? Whatever the case, these Lakers look as tight-knit as they've been so far this season -- which, granted, isn't really saying that much -- and just might indeed make the postseason. They'll be facing off against the Dallas Mavericks today in a matchup of former western conference superpowers. For the Mavericks, Dirk Nowitzki is still struggling to regain his peak form, and at the age of 34, those days might just be over. Bryant, also 34, is still going strong -- on the surface. His defense has slipped dramatically in the past couple of years. Former Mav and Dirk's best friend, Steve Nash, also has been in a season-long slump that may be more due to his advanced years.
It may be up to the young gun, Dwight Howard, to make the difference tonight. Howard has stepped up his play in recent weeks, supposedly because he was so inspired by the tribute to Dr Jerry Buss' life.
Another old gun, Vince Carter, is playing well for the Mavericks. This showdown tonight features a bunch of all stars -- from 2004.
