Form guide: David Moyes got his United career off to a winning start with last weekend’s 2-0 Community Shield triumph over Wigan Athletic at Wembley, where the Reds were always in command and claimed the trophy for a record-extending 20th time thanks to Robin van Persie’s brace. Swansea City’s competitive season is also already underway: they qualified for the Europa League play-offs after a goalless draw in Malmo last week, which followed a 4-0 win in the first leg of their qualifier at the Liberty Stadium.
Ins and outs: United are definitely without Rafael, who picked up a hamstring injury at Wembley but would have missed the Barclays Premier League opener through suspension anyway, having been sent off against Chelsea at the end of last season. Michael Carrick (eye infection), Nani (groin), Javier Hernandez (hamstring), Ashley Young and Jonny Evans (both ankle) are all doubtful. The Swans will be without Jonathan De Guzman after the midfielder suffered concussion while on international duty with the Netherlands but hope to have Jonjo Shelvey (illness) and Pablo Hernandez (groin) available.
Last meeting: In Sir Alex Ferguson’s final home game on 12 May, United won 2-1 at Old Trafford thanks to Rio Ferdinand’s late winner, his first goal in over four years. Hernandez had put the Reds ahead but Michu equalised for the visitors.
