Federer made to work for spot in Hamburg semis

Roger Federer came through a gruelling encounter against Florian Mayer to seal his place in the semi-finals of the German Tennis Championships in Hamburg on Friday.

The Swiss survived a second-set scare before coming through 7-6 (7/4) 3-6 7-5 in just under two hours.

"It was extremely difficult," Federer said on the ATP website.

"I started really well. I thought we were both hitting the ball well in the first set and not giving each other that many chances.

"It went down to the wire."

Federer will play qualifier Federico Delbonis in the last four after he completed a fine comeback against Fernando Verdasco, the 14th seed.

Delbonis saved two match points on his way to a 6-7 (5/7) 7-6 (8/6) 6-4 victory.

The other semi-final will be between Italy's Fabio Fognini and Spain's Nicolas Almagro.

Fognini saw off Tommy Haas 6-2 6-4, while Almagro overcame Juan Monaco 4-6 6-0 6-3.

Woods feeling good at halfway stage

Tiger Woods believes he is well placed to end his major tournament drought after a steady second round at the Open Championship at Muirfield.

The world number one, who won the last of his 14 major titles five years ago, shot a level-par 71 to remain at two under at the halfway stage in Scotland.

Woods said: "I'm in a good spot. These guys have to go out this afternoon [Friday] and obviously play a golf course that's quick and is drying out and with a different wind. So it will be tough out there."

Woods started ominously for his rivals with two birdies in his first five holes but hard ground again made approaches difficult and the 37-year-old needed to putt well to maintain his position.
